The Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) decision to re-start its asbestos awareness campaign next year has been welcomed by construction union Ucatt.
Ucatt said the resumption of the regulator's award-winning Hidden Killer initiative, to warn construction workers of the dangers of the potentially lethal material, was "excellent news".
The HSE launched the campaign in 2008 and a further phase of it was due to take place in October last year but it was shelved due to a government freeze on communication initiatives, Ucatt said.
At the HSE's board meeting earlier this month it was announced that a new phase of the campaign would be launched in 2012.
George Guy, acting general secretary of Ucatt, said: "This is excellent news, the Hidden Killer campaign saves lives. A fresh phase of the campaign is long overdue. All the feedback shows that the campaign has been successful in educating construction workers on the dangers of asbestos.”
Asbestos is the single greatest cause of work-related deaths in the UK.
