Two men have been charged over a £1 million phishing scam that targeted hundreds of UK students.

Damola Olatunji, 26, of Hamsterley Avenue, Manchester, and Amos Mwangi, 25, of Rochdale Way, Deptford, London, were remanded in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

They will appear at Southwark Crown Court on February 17th, Scotland Yard said.

Both face a charge of conspiracy to defraud and Mr Olatunji is also charged with possession of an article for use in fraud.

Five other people arrested in the investigation have been bailed until March.

The criminal network targeted hundreds of students on government loan schemes, tricking them into revealing their bank details before draining their accounts of cash, taking £1,000 to £5,000 at a time.

The fraudsters sent emails inviting students to update details on their student account via a link to a bogus website.

According to research by GetSafeOnline, 23 per cent of UK web users have been victims of a phishing scam.ADNFCR-3406-ID-801239828-ADNFCR
