Rail safety commended

The transport minister has commended the UK railway industry's commitment to health and safety at an event in London.

MP Norman Baker praised safety professionals attending the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s (IOSH) Rail Industry Conference 2011.

He said UK rail safety had improved "significantly" in recent years.

More than 130 safety professionals from the rail industry were at the conference to hear from Mr Baker and other industry figures, including Anna Walker, chair of the Office of Rail Regulation and Terry Morgan CBE, chairman of Crossrail.

"We are one of the safest railways in Europe, and that’s a tribute to people in the industry who have striven hard, to ensure that the railways are safe," the minister told delegates.

"People no longer question whether the railways are safe, because the reality is that in recent years rail safety performance has increased significantly."

Now in its seventh year, the IOSH Rail Conference has become a key date in the diaries of safety professionals within the industry.

Organised by the IOSH Railway Group, the Rail Conference featured a mix of speeches, practical sessions, expert advice and debate.ADNFCR-3406-ID-801221107-ADNFCR
