Steve Murphy is new Ucatt general secretary

Steve Murphy has been elected general secretary of the construction union Ucatt.

Mr Murphy, currently the union's Yorkshire regional secretary, polled 5,475 votes. The other candidate in the running, Jerry Swain, polled 3,529 votes.

Ucatt is the largest union in the construction industry representing workers throughout the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Mr Murphy said under his stewardship Ucatt would be a campaigning union tackling "the rogue employers that blight our industry".

"But I will be willing to work with good employers to secure our members jobs, pensions and their futures," he said.

George Guy, acting general secretary of Ucatt, said: "I am delighted that Steve Murphy has been elected. He will make an excellent general secretary. This was a critical election for the union and it is now the responsibility of all Ucatt members to unite behind him."

Mr Murphy takes up his role on Monday January 9th 2012.ADNFCR-3406-ID-801244059-ADNFCR
