THEFT OF METALS FROM BUILDINGS - ON THE INCREASE.

Building Under Construction

Whilst the theft of metals from buildings is not new, the recent increase in the market value of metals has led to a rise in the number of metal-related thefts.

Non-ferrous metals such as copper and lead are specifically targeted with many losses involving unoccupied buildings and the theft of copper cabling, pipe-work, sanitary fittings and lead from rooftops.

In addition to the cost of replacing stolen property, the damage caused to the fabric of the building through its forced removal can also incur very large repair bills. The theft of lead from roofs will often result in subsequent damage caused rainwater ingress.

Once a building has been attacked in this way further attacks can occur within a short period. Good management procedures including regular inspection visits, regular maintenance of the property and good levels of security can help to prevent criminal attack and also reduce the eventual cost of remedial work if a theft occurs.

To help your clients, we've created a guide to types of security measures that they should consider to help them reduce the possibility of metal theft - and other forms of malicious damage. Click here to download the PDF
