The number of people killed at work in Britain rose sharply last year, according to official figures.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said 171 were killed at work in the year to March 2011 – compared to 147 during the previous 12 months.
In contrast, the number of workplace deaths in Scotland fell by almost a third, the figures show.
Some 15 workers died in 2010/11, seven fewer than 2009/10.
High-risk industries included construction, which saw 50 UK deaths last year, agriculture (34) and recycling (nine).
The HSE urged employers to make the safety of workers their top priority for 2012, and reminded them of their legal responsibility to ensure lives are not put at risk.
Dr Paul Stollard, HSE director in Scotland, said: "These statistics highlight why we need good health and safety in British workplaces.
"Employers should spend their time tackling the real dangers that workers face rather than worrying about trivial risks or pointless paperwork."
In response to the recent Lofstedt report, ministers are to start streamlining health and safety red tape in the new year.
